International Reading Festival

On April 18th, 2010, Alumni Park on the University of Southern California campus was the scene of the third annual International Reading Festival celebrating literacy through cultural awareness. Families from the neighborhoods surrounding the campus spent the day exploring different regions. Each child participating received an atlas and other books for their personal libraries. They carried a ‘passport’ that was stamped at each region they visited where they heard folktales, stories, and engaged in activities related to the culture and geography of the area. A special quilting booth was a popular station for participants to express their creativity while learning about quilting, a tradition shared by many world cultures. Everyone, kids and volunteers alike, had a great time ‘traveling the world.’

This event was sponsored by USC ReaderPlus and Project Books and Blankies, and was made possible by the support of volunteers and generous donations from local and national organizations. Plans for next year’s event are already underway!
